Take this book on a Thought Walk
Creative Thinkering: Putting Your Imagination to Work
By Michael Michalko
NewWorld Library, ISBN 978-1-60868-024-5, 232 pages.
Where did our creativity go? - that's my question. Social media and "The Media" provide rich resources for learning and sharing and pushing information to us. And, I'm generalizing, we absorb more than we need. Mindlessly, passively, carelessly, we soak it up. We similarly repeat the messages. Much of our brain power is spend, wasted, in this thoughtless environment. If you'd like to change the way you expend the power of your mind, this book is a good resource.
The first 142 pages, Part One, is dedicated to answering questions, such as:
"Why doesn't education foster more creativity instead of less?"
"Why are some people more creative and other not?"
An exercise or two is contained in each chapter; one designed to shift your thought patterns. "Conceptual blending" is the term Michalko coined. Readers are led to expand their imaginations by learning to synthesize dissimilar subjects, think paradoxically, and enlist the help of the subconscious mind.
Part Two explores what is means to have the intention and desire to be creative. With chapters like You Become What You Pretend To Be, Change the Way You Speak and You Change the Way You Think, and Intention is the Seed of Creative Thinking, you'd think this book is found in the Self-Help section in the library. Creative Thinkering is located on the business / creativity shelf.
Are there any truly original ideas out there? I ask you, are you a creative genius generating those innovative thoughts or are you a mindless iterator rehashing and disseminating the ideas of others, giving little to no consideration to the full meaning of the words?
If you aspire to innovate and stimulate, Creative Thinkering provides good fodder for thought generation. Take a Thought Walk - one where you actively look at your surroundings and compare objects, events or situations to a project you're tasked with. The author uses a comparison between potholes and a project to improve corporate communications.
The book could make a difference in your life and the lives of others. Think big.

Creative Thinkering by Michael Michalko provides readers with actionable methods to tap into and broaden their natural creativity. Aimed at those who question their imaginative abilities, Michael reveals a systematic approach to generating new ideas through the association of two or more dissimilar subjects; resulting in the generation of entirely new products, services, and methods. Was this review helpful? Throughout Creative Thinkering, Michael provides detail rich examples of his method's application as well as challenging the reader to develop his or her own capabilities through numerous thought experiments. These elements transform this book from one that simply provides a method into one that is a teaching manual; helping even the most rigid of thinkers expand their creative horizons.
I like Creative Thinkering because of its immediately implementable methods for expanding one's creative output. Michael clearly illustrates that anyone can be highly creative and through his plentiful thought experiments convinces even the most rigid thinkers that they too can be the source of highly original ideas. In a fast moving world that requires continuous adaptation, Creative Thinkering can help arm any professional with a crucial skill needed to remain competitive.
I have long benefited from Michael's insights on creativity. I thoroughly enjoyed his earlier book, Thinkertoys and have applied the methods he prescribes therein to my work almost every day. If I had one criticism of Creative Thinkering it would be that Michael's new book is not as `fun' as his last - but it is by all accounts just as valuable.
Overcoming ones creative doubts is a key ingredient to taking the actions necessary to remain competitive in our highly innovative and rapidly changing world. Michael's book provides those with such doubts a clear method for dealing with their rigidness and conceiving the truly unique; making Creative Thinkering a StrategyDriven recommended read.
All the Best,
