A smart funny read; more than simply informational or merely a critique
The author explores the backgrounds on particular films, and the kinds of audiences who embrace them. The list is a nice mix of films you love, ones you need to see again, and ones you never heard of but now might. The Book is presented as a series of mini-essays which is a good call because McCarthy is a very funny essayist. I thought this was a useful choice as the designation of 'cult film' has nothing to do with artistic merit or commercial success, and everything to do with affection. So a ponderous deconstruction is not antithetical to the topic. It's excellent for what it is. I'd give it 5 Stars, but I save that for Chomsky and Joyce.
