The Ship and the Sea Serpent

Cyrus the sea serpent is living an uneventful life.  In fact, he’s a little bored.  That’s why he takes a dare from a shark to attack a ship about to set sail.  However, his good nature wins out and he decides to try to help the ship reach land again.  But can he help them with all the dangers of the sea?

I remembered liking this book from years ago, but it snuck up on me just how much I did like it when I read it again.  While Cyrus’ potential behavior at the beginning of the book isn’t good, his behavior for the rest of it more than makes up for it.  Adults will figure out where the story is going early on, but kids will still thrill at each of the events of the story.

Bill Peet’s pictures are always charming, but they are especially fun here.  They capture the creative story perfectly and throw a little extra humor into things as well.

This is a different and fun tale from a creative storyteller.  You and your kids will enjoy it.
