    Still in love with Atlantis

I remember being 14 and eagerly awaiting this movie's release. At the time, I had never seen anything like it, but it seemed from the trailers to be the stuff of my fantasies - an adventure with elaborate exploration vehicles, strange text, ancient mystery, and the most attractive protagonist Disney has ever offered (okay, your mileage may vary on Milo, but come on!). When the film was finally released, I loved it. But it seemed that others around me didn't. Everyone I talked to about Atlantis: The Lost Empire panned it for being strange and nonsensical.

Now that the film has enjoyed a new moment in the spotlight with the rise of steampunk fashion, many who didn't like it in 2002 are re-watching it. Now Atlantis has its flaws. The story introduces so many characters that it would be better served being about a half-hour longer to finish their plot arcs without the sudden ending the film was given. The conflict between characters could have been played up a bit more than the rather trite external conflict of Kida being the last one able to save Atlantis. Still, the film is beautiful and fun and has a great collection of characters that appeal to both children and adults.

I will continue to consider Atlantis: The Lost Empire one of Disney's best.
