As the sun sets upon Babylon....

Though at times Brooklyn Babylon seems as if director Marc Levin took a little too much from the Spike Lee school of directing, I would still strongly recommend this film. Starring Tariq Trotter (AKA Black Thought) and having the likes of Slick Rick (who makes the film worth watching even if you can find no other reason to watch it) and Bonz Malone of Vibe magazine as supporting actors, Brooklyn Babylon examines the issues of music, culture, love, sex, violence and the reality of living in Crown Heights in a pretty standard and lesson-learning way. This is not to say that the movie isn't still enjoyable. The most particularly pleasing points of the picture are the scenes in which Tariq Trotter and his real-life band the Roots perform a few original compositions (which I desperately wish were on CD). The occasionally lacking dialogue sometimes hinders the pace and punch of the film, but all in all Brooklyn Babylon is worth the hour and a half you'll spend watching it. If you're a fan of hip-hop music, Judaism, the Roots, Slick Rick, or Spike Lee films, you'll be sure to enjoy this film.
