Heartwarming and hard-hitting
This is a story of a self-absorbed American doctor (Patrick Swayze) who finds himself by helping build -- and then protect -- a clinic in Calcutta run by an Irish nurse (Pauline Collins). The doctor's soul-searching is slightly less interesting than the India scene and the stories of the Indian characters -- when you come down to it, American angst seems small-minded when compared with a clinic being threatened by a brutal gang lord (Art Malik), a farmer who lost his farm to grapsing money-lenders (Om Puri), and a clever but crippled leper fighting for his human rights (Nabil Shaban). Hard-hitting drama, gorgeous Indian scenes, excellent acting, real issues, happy ending! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
