Entertaining, but definitely far from the best.

First the bad: I wasn't sure what I expected when I started watching this film, but there were 2 main flaws in the film that wouldn't leave me alone. 1.--The music stunk big time. It reminded me of that cheap, workplace-training video music from the 80's (although in some parts it fit pretty well, I will admit). There was no subtlety to the music, no gradual build. It just showed up all of a sudden, and not in the good John Williams' 'Jaws' fashion. Especially in anime, a little suspense and volume change in the music goes a long way. None of that here. 2.--Some of those voice characterizations got to me. Aren't these people in Tokyo? Why is it that 2 of the girl characters have deeper 'hick' accents than a southern girl like myself could even try to imitate? Chibi's accent is unashamedly mexican for a native Tokyo character. Sayaka's voice doesn't quite fit, a little too boldly English (at least they had her father, the president, kinda the same way). Besides that, did there really need to be so much needless cursing? I've been to public school, and I don't care about cursing happening. But the dubbed version had more cursing in the first ten minutes than the entire movie in Japanese. Then again, it was the 80's... I will say the action (portrayed mostly by a young guy w/ a fancy stick fighting demons) did well. I did get to sympathize with the characters somewhat, and it was neat to see a bad guy be a bad guy just for the hell of being a bad guy. Also, the good guy, Kyoya, starts to grow up throughout the film, which lets me shed a good word on his behalf. If you're looking for a way to kill an hour and a half of time, it'll work for you. If you get over the 'flaws' and problems I had with it, you'll enjoy it.
