Sentience, spirit and personality- what does it mean?

As I watched the series, I found myself waiting eagerly for the next chapter. Not just because the show was an interesting mix of intrigue and science fiction, but because this professional team of cyborgs, humans and prosthetically enhanced secret agents works on many levels. There's the obvious but well written stories of secret-agent missions to fight crime and terrorism. Soon you start learning more about who these team members really are. They work together and evolve as loyal friends and coworkers. Evolution can apparently be more subtle than the expected character development. The team's mysterious and beautiful leader commands unflinching loyalty, and as she works closely with her human and augmented human team, she begins to change. Evolution of mind is not just for bipedal humanoids, either. It can have stranger roots. The series delves deep into the meaning of relationships and the effect those relationships have on those involved, and the meaning and origen of sentience as well as spirit, and what it means to be a person.
