Carole Lombard should haunt Jill Clayburgh!
Goodness gracious! Am I really going to have to buy this on DVD? I guess so, as I am the consummate Carole Lombard fan. I caught the TV version (could this possibly have been released theatrically? oh, the humanity!) on AMC, and it was a tortured viewing, to say the least. Carole Lombard was the wittiest, warmest, funniest, earthiest, most endearing actress ever to come out of Hollywood, and Jill Clayburgh managed somehow to drain every once of loveability out of her character and leave the viewer with nothing but a sham portrayal of an annoying, shallow, humorless pain in the tuckus. The writing is painful, the staging is absurd, the acting is abominable. Somehow, a group of idiots in the 1970's took one of the greatest love stories in Hollywood (featuring two amazing personalities, a story rife with humor, interesting situations, the evocations of a golden era of cinema, fascinating supporting characters, and a truly poignant ending), and turned it into an abhorrent atrocious mess. Only for strange fans who want to see an uninterrupted desecration of their favorite actress should buy this DVD. Like I said, I will be soon. Was this review helpful?
