This is a wonderful classic movie depicting life at the turn of the last century.  It is very true to the book, "Mama's Bank Account"by Kathryn Forbes which I also recommend.  It's a sweet little read of a book.

    My Christmas Tradition

Love this movie. Watching it on Christmas day has become a family tradition. We love Uncle Chris, the dark norwegian, Uncle Elizabeth and especially Mama. It reminds us of our own little Norwegian grandmother - especially the hospital scene. So glad to finally have a copy of our own.

    One of the Essentials

Irene Dunne is almost nearly forgotten today. That is sad, since she was the top actress of her day, and portrays the title character here with grace and humor. This is a classic story of an immigrant family, portrayed as honest and real. This family classic that has lost none of its fact the only thing a younger audience might quibble about is that is black and white...and it is...gloriously filmed that way.

A classic on par with ''Grapes of Wrath''

Excellent film. Watch this one with your family, it'll bring you closer together. A tale of struggle of a modest Norwegian immigrant family in turn-of-the century San Fransisco. Real old-fashioned family values are put to the test here, as mom tries to hold the family together after dad loses his job & little sister becomes gravely ill. A little slow in its pacing, but the skillful black & white cinematography, the compelling, dramatic storyline, combined with and the reverent look at the America of the past is worth the patience required to watch the film.
