Elizabeth is a workaholic doctor trying to get an attending position at a hospital in San Francisco. She loves helping people but sacrifices her social life. On one late night she is in a car accident.
David has withdrawn from society out of depression and ends up renting Elizabeth’s apartment. Her spirit keeps hanging around but he is the only one who can see her.
This is a funny romantic comedy not a scary ghost story. There is a good twist part way through, though it is a bit predictable.

Cute premise, but hackneyed execution

"Just Like Heaven" (based on the book Just Like Heaven) stars Reese Witherspoon as Elizabeth Masterson, a workaholic young doctor aspiring to become a resident physician in a San Francisco hospital. Elizabeth works double shifts (at the beginning, she's just finished 26 hours on call) and survives on espresso and cafeteria salads; she works because she truly cares about her patients and wants to do the right thing, even at the expense of her personal life. She has no love life, despite a friend's attempts to set her up on blind dates. While driving over to her sister's house on a rainy night, she's hit head-on by a semi (for some reason, this brought to mind Heart and Souls).

Three months later David Abbot (Mark Ruffalo), a landscape architect, is looking to rent an apartment with a great couch. He seems lost in personal tragedy, drowning his sorrows in copious amounts of alcohol. Shortly after he moves into Elizabeth's apartment, she appears to him, insulting his slobby housekeeping skills and demanding that he leave her apartment immediately. She disappears as quickly as she arrives, leading David to think that he must be hallucinating. David talks to his shrink friend Jack (Donal Logue) and seeks advice from Darryl (Jon Heder, Napoleon Dynamite), who claims to be able to sense ghosts. All I could sense was a rehash of Jon's Napoleon character, and the addition of Darryl felt unnecessary (or at least, a recast was called for). David and Elizabeth become grudging allies as they seek to uncover the truth behind Elizabeth's condition, coming up against hospital bureaucracy, and this takes up most of the film.

The scenery is nice enough, but there's so much artificial sweetness and logical improbabilities that go far beyond suspension of disbelief to make this workable. The various subplots (and choice of casting for Jack and Darryl) never really gelled for me. The attempts to insert physical comedy fell flat (David's seemingly spasmodic fight with a shot glass in a bar, Elizabeth attempting to "jump back" into her body, Elizabeth's sister running around wielding a meat cleaver), and Jon Heder's signature stoner hippie quickly grew grating. The script relied heavily on genre conventions (cue the "Ghostbusters" theme and references to The Joy Luck Club, and the climax felt far too scripted and forced to be effective (and there are medical impossibilities that boggle the mind). That's unfortunate, because Witherspoon's and Ruffalo's characters are likeable and their relationship has chemistry. With different writers, this could have been a great little romantic comedy, but as is it's only so-so.

Lighten the Mood

A sweet chick flick to pop in when you're feeling stressed about life. Not gonna say anything about the plot, because I'd probably spoil it, haha. Only drawback is that the effects for Reese's ghost-persona are really cheesy. But there's only a few scenes that you really notice it. Overall, a sweet comedy with relatable characters that you can sympathize with. I own and love this movie. :)

Wonderful!

This is a funny, sweet, romantic movie that I absolutely love! "David" and "Elizabeth" were cast so perfectly and are so cute together. Though you can predict a happy ending, the movie itself isn't predictable or cliche. It will be well worth the 1 1/2 hours and the cost of a rental!!!

LOVE IT!!

i absolutely loved this movie!! its not the typical lovestory/drama/comedy~ it gets emotional and during certain points in the story, you really dont know whats going to happen! its like a breath of fresh air from other predictable movie plots. it all fell together very nicely, and reese witherspoon and mark ruffalo, as well as john heder, acted brilliantly, that you forget that their just acting! youll just regret as the credits roll that its already over.

A Sweet, romantic movie

I had heard bad things about this movie, so I was hesitant about seeing it. However, the fact that it's based on one of my favorite books "If Only It Were True", intrigued me enough to take the plunge. The plot is a little strange, so I would definately recommend reading the book first, and then watching the movie. I thought that having a movie made out of this wonderful book would ruin it, but I was pleasantly surprised. If I had cast the movie, I probably would have picked different actors (only because I didn't picture a Reese Witherspoon type when I read the book), but it turned out to be wonderful.There are some beautiful shots of San Francisco throughout the movie. The plot follows the book really well, and the changes made actually make the movie better. I don't know why they changed the characters names or the title, but it all works nicely. If you are even the slightest bit hesitant about seeing "Just Like Heaven" because of the plot, read the book first. You'll love it!

A Fresh and Funny Romantic Comedy

I watched "Just Like Heaven" last night and I gotta say it's the funniest and most refreshing romantic comedy I've seen in a long time. It also gave me a rare opportunity to see a romantic comedy fantasy - it's a shame Hollywood doesn't make more of those. Like in "Splash" and the movie version of "Bewitched", "Just Like Heaven" has a lonely, romantically-challenged man fall in love with a pretty but mystical woman. There's a magical feel to it and, despite obvious differences, true love conquers all....including death, in this case. The movie delivers some clever references of "Ghostbusters" and "Sleeping Beauty", as well as a rare chance to let the leading man actually be funny. Sweetly emotional, laugh-out-loud funny, and romantic in a warmhearted way, "Just Like Heaven" is a delightful and unique romantic comedy fantasy that should be enjoyed by all.

Me and my girlfriend when to see this movie in the theater and I loved it. Reese did a great job and so did Mark!

This Movie Is the love comedy of the year! it is so good. Very Emotional characters and Resse... uhh reese she is so good!!!

Great actors, so-so script...

Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo light up the screen in this surreal story of boy meets ghost. There's no doubt that the duo are well-accomplished, and talented... but, the script doesn't allow these two to shine (as we all know they can)! Mark Ruffalo plays David, a lonely and sad soul, looking for a place to live. He ends up finding a new apartment with a great view, and an unexpected guest! More knee-slapping funny than romantic, the cast is rounded out with film veterans Dina Waters and Donal Logue. This film is worth watching, just don't expect the script to make believers out of you. Even fine actors like Witherspoon and Ruffalo couldn't save this fragile story.

Just like heaven is a touching story of a girl in a coma who's soul remains in her home as if she is alive. A guy moves in to her apartment and she talks to him. He is the only one who can hear and see her. He now has to persuade her family that she will live and not to pull the plug of her life support. This movie will move you to an ineminable extent. My real rAting is 4.5 stars.

A Great Movie!

Ever since I first saw the commercials on TV, I wanted to see this. Once I did, I didn't feel let down. It is a really great movie, even if it is a little far fetched. I can't wait to get it on DVD.

Could've Been Better....

Reese Witherspoon is a great actress, but let's just say she isn't at her best in this movie. There is hardly chemistry between the two main characters. The story is believable and it is portrayed all right, but it lacks good acting skills and that something that makes a great movie. The rating could, and probably should be lowerd to a PG. I'd say it's appropriate for ages 9 and up. Not something I highly recommend, but still, it's worth watching.
