TRUE AMERICAN GANGSTER
"Mr. Untouchable" is the long-overdue documentary on one of America's most notorious organized crime figures. Leroy 'Nicky' Barnes' name has been mentioned for years as a celebrated NYC mobster through street lore, underrepresented in the pop-cultural folklore of celebrated criminals like Al Capone and John Gotti because of his skin color and labeled a menace to society by by the NYPD and FBI.Was this review helpful? This piece strips away the race bias and superfly exaggerated tales by sticking to the facts and interviewing the characters that matter the most, Barnes himself and the people he was directly involved with. Thorough research when into gathering the facts and stories that explained why he was so significant to the New York underworld. This almost comes off as a counter to the mishandled Hollywood fairytale 'American Gangster' which placed Nicky Barnes in a peripheral position as some small-time competitor to Frank Lucas which allegedly was far from the case. This straightens much of the controversy out in painstaking yet engaging detail.
I highly recommend this for all interested in true crime documentaries (like cable's Gangland series, BET's American Gangster and Cocaine Cowboys) and features like The Godfather, The Wire, The Sopranos, Carlito's Way, New Jack City, Black Ceasar (NJC & BC both based loosely on Barnes life), Donnie Brasco, Paid In Full and others influenced by real events & characters. And Don't miss out the interesting bonus features with further explain some situations.
