When You Gotta Pick a Pickford Flick...

...This is the Pickford Flick to Pick! You simply can't go wrong with MY BEST GIRL. The plot is one you've seen a million times, but it just doesn't matter. This film is so engrossing and transporting that you'll swear it's all brand new. The performances, direction, settings, music, humor, you name it -- all are pitch perfect. If you've never seen a silent film, this is the one to see. If you know someone who thinks silents aren't worth seeing, show them this one. If you'd like to see a silent film that really holds up in the 21st century, search no further. If you're feeling down or depressed, see this film. If you need a date movie in a pinch, grab this one. If you'd just like to sit back, relax and watch a DVD that's fun, entertaining and top-notch in virtually every way... well, you know the answer. If there is a flaw -- and this is nitpicking -- it would be an extended sequence toward the end that veers dangerously close to going over the top. Otherwise, it's sweet, charming, romantic and old-fashioned in the best possible sense, but never cloying or saccharine. It's simple, straightforward, predictable... and perfect. MY BEST GIRL is one of the very few films, silent or otherwise, that I can't imagine anyone disliking. And it has tremendous rewatchability -- an important factor when considering a purchase. A word about the new musical score: David Michael Frank NAILS this movie. This is, hands down, one of the best silent film scores I've heard. It adds major impact to an already strong film, and don't be surprised if the breezy themes bounce around your head for weeks after viewing. Am I gushing? You better believe it! After writing all of this, I just can't help myself... I gotta go watch MY BEST GIRL!

    A charmer!

I bought this movie because I wasdoing research on dime stores of thepast and the plot has Mary Pickfordworking in one. Although thereweren't enough interior store scenesfor my purpose, the picture turnedout to be serendipity in action! The silent expressions are wonderfulto watch; Mary Pickford is touchingand charming in her role. I've seena number of silent films through theyears while doing cinematic studiesand think that this DVD edition withits restoration work is a fineexample to include in a homelibrary. The new score added to thisedition is part of the "voices" inthis picture, and the subdued soundeffects are most appropriatelyplaced and mixed. Reading wordcaptions is kept to a minimum; twotints are used which generate slightly different modes. Well worththe price -- and the DVD is a finegift for those who appreciate cinematic art. As a side note, I will add that although the picture is classified as a "romantic comedy",it's not at all in the category of today's generally accepted meaningof that genre. Some of the scenesmake this picture stand alone in itsown class. I call it a touchingmovie with some comedic moments.Hooray for Hollywood!

    A Classic, Somewhat True Story

It is hard to get over the fact that these two married years after making this picture. One wonders if Mary hadn't been married to Douglas Fairbanks at the time if she wouldn't have gone off and married Rogers immediately after one of their scenes. Their chemistry is undenyable and the movie is fun to watch, if only for the fact that we truely know something the actors do not- they're in love. Current movies can be just as sweet as this, which is probably why it is one of the most popular Pickford movies. Just like today, audiences can get involved in My Best Girl and feel what the characters are feeling for each other. This one will never die.

You┬┐ll enjoy this silent gem very much!

Mary Pickford stars as a shop girl named Maggie who works in a five and dime store. She soon finds herself attracted to Joe; one of the other store clerks (Buddy Rogers). What she doesn't know is that he's the storeowners' son who's working there to prove himself to his father. What will Maggie do when she finds out? Will romance still be able to blossom? Buy this film and see for yourself. This is a charming movie that will make a nice addition to any film collection.
