Still great the second time.

We watched the entire run of Northern Exposure when our children were very young. Now they are watching the whole series again with us and enjoying it just as much as we did. Cicely, Alaska is a timeless small town with an irresistable crossroads of unique characters. Rather than violence or action, you'll find filmmaking, art, flight, spiritual ties to the land, relationships, humor and a string of broken stereotypes. Enjoy!

Mysticism, Feminism, and Mythology in Alaska

This remains my all-time favorite television series--with story and depth rare in this medium. The characters of Cicely, Alaska take us through a Jungian landscape inhabited by primal archtypes from diverse cultures and worlds. What does it mean to be in the belly of the whale? What's with a bear named Arthur and how does one know if he's a shepherd? Always the hero's quest forms the the arch of each episode as well as the overall series.

Joel: a Jewish doctor thrust by a bargin into a small town located in the wilds of a northern forest and at times exiled on frozen tundra. He cannot leave this world until he completes his assigned task and in the process must pass many tests and discover what is hidden in himself.

Maggie, part feminist/part vixen, uncovers the power of the wild woman and what it means to own the legacy that is being uncovered. At times a little girl on her way to granny's house and at other times a strong, affirmative force to be reckoned with. She sends letters down a river to the men who have inhabited her life, seeking understanding and reconciliation. But these men are all dead and there is a developing mythology in Cicely that she is a curse to men.

Many more characters live in this town, each an archtype with a mytholgy to explore as spirits and stories merge to interact and influence each other. Should not be passed by!
