Great movie, not such a great DVD package

This is an amazing movie and one of my favorites. If you are looking for a typical Adam Sandler comedy then look elsewhere. If you are familiar with PTA's other work then you should have a better idea of what to expect. The reason I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars though is because the second disc really isnt worth the extra money and because the DVD lacks a commentary track which would have been much appreciated.

    Excellent Piece of Art

This movie is a wonderful film that breaks standard romantic comedy conventions and knowlingly plays off of others. Amazing acting from Adam Sandler coupled with wonderful directing. Paul Thomas Anderson's (director) strong visual sensibilities knock viewers for a loop.

    An Uncomfortable Pleasure

This film is not intended for viewing while you are drinking with loud friends, coming in and out of the room while doing laundry, or talking to your sister who's spending the summer overseas. Sadly, a lot of people probably expected just that type of experience upon sitting down to watch this film. However, by the time this made it to DVD, the majority of film enthusiasts had probably heard the word on the street...that this is not your typical Sandler movie. That being said, this is a great film dealing with issues that most people who wouldn't enjoy it find disturbing, and that is most likely the very reason some will not give it a chance. This movie does what good art is supposed to do...present something new and make you think. Is it too coffee house for most Billy Madison fans? Sure. Is it different than Magnolia and Boogie Nights? Yes. But stepping to the side and doing something a little different is what makes it fresh and durable. Those who can enjoy it will be pulling it out of their collection for years to come.

    Original, Witty, and Consuming

Refrain from seeking Billy Madison here; Instead find an original, unique, and tragic look into the results of poor and wise choices, familial influence, and the real power of love.

    P. T. Anderson and Adam Sandler: an unexpected brilliant team

If you thought P. T. Anderson would never be able to atop Magnolia, you better think again. Instead of distributing emotions in a great number of characters, here we can see deep in the soul of a lonely man (Sandler) as he fights to break the walls he had to build to protect himself from his seven sister, but that ended isolating him from everyone else.

    Contrary to the Above...

I believe the other consumer review was written by an angry little man incapable of appreciating something so wonderful as this film. Paul Thomas Anderson is remarkable, and this film is further proof of that.

I want a refund for the movie rental fee

The only thing I liked about the movie was that I didn't pay to watch it in the movie theater. I was looking forward to seeing Adam Sandler in a more serious role but this movie was just too bizarre.

    The Emperor's Clothes

It's one of these arty little films where we're meant to get what the director is on about and see how deep and clever it is and it's just not cool to say otherwise. In truth, it's complete and utter nonsense. Adam Sandler has made some brilliant films and there is certainly more to his acting than just making us laugh. He's also made some howlers though, and I'm afraid this is one of them.

    Hmmmm

There was no punch and there were no drunks. I feel ripped off.
