I think my 5-star rating makes my answer obvious - this one! You can tell by watching this movie, that the director obviously read and understood Sense and Sensibility. There are important family dynamics that the other two versions don't cover as well. This movie has a great cast - Emma Thompson, Kate Winsley, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman. It's also true to the spirit of teh novel. What I like best, perhaps, is that while remaining very faithful to the book, it managed a good time and is easily enjoyed by non-JaneAusten fans. My parents loved it.

My favorite scene: The proposal! It was beautiful - I cried a whole lot. LOL. A definate recommend, so don't waste any more time. Go watch it!

GREAT MOVIE

This is a great movie, especially for Jane Austen fans since the performances really bring out the nuances of feeling for each character.

    Not so much.

I'm a huge Austen fan, and see every adaptation that comes along. This one was an inaccurate adaptation that wasn't at all true to the spirit of the book. All the little "charming" interactions with the youngest sister were totally out of place for the time, and Emma Thompson was a more appropriate choice for Mrs. Dashwood than Elinor. One of the essential tensions of the book was how someone as young as Elinor could act with such self restraint, and Emma Tompson was in her mid to late thirties when this film was made. I think Thompson looks fabulous, but she didn't look 21. Kate Winslet was perfect.
