    Beautiful Story

I was deeply touched by this movie. It was well made and beautifully written. The casting was excellent. I think no other could have played Mary and Fransisco better that Polly Walker and Vincent Perez. You could feel the attraction between them and the chemistry was amazing. I was so moved by the story that I ordered the book that it was based on...Mary Lavelle by Kate O'Brien.

    Stunningly beautiful, lushly romantic

This is a sleeper film of a romance during a revolution. I've watched it countless times and find a new detail or nuance each time. Polly Walker does a superb characterization of dignity, longing and restraint combined with passion. Vincent Perez, the Brad Pitt of France, is exemplary and devestatingly romantic. Each actor or actress in this gem are supurb. Frances MacDormand and Penelope Cruz are the best known, but ALL involved shine. Do not be put off by the occassional use of subtitles. This is a movie to be viewed again and again!
