This movie is a pure hollywood acceptance of cheating and adultery. Just because something is cute does not make it good. If I acted upon every romantic possibility then i would have cheated much in my life. The way that rachel McAdams lies to her fiance the night before she cheats on him just made my skin cringe. Looking past the awful plot it was done reasonably well. That is hollywood for you. The budget was there for a worthless movie. This movie will go down as the ultimate glorification of adultery. the fact that so many people enjoy teh film makes me wonder about american society. It would be okay for me to return to my high school sweetheart because we never had closure. hmmmmm.... interesting. Cheating is cheating and lying is even worse.

Two good performances cannot save this boring waste of time.

Nothing is quite so pathetic as a failed tear-jerker, and this movie is it. Strong performances by James Garner and Gena Rowlands provide the only interesting moments in this otherwise tedious film. Rachel McAdams is particularly annoying as young Allie. Her attempts to appear ingenuous are positively irritating. She appears not to have a clue about how to render this character. But since most of the other characters tend to blend into the woodwork, I suppose she deserves some credit. Joan Allen, as Allie's mother, turns in the only other performance worthy of note. She does a fine job. The attempt to recreate the 1940s is incredibly inept. Why is it only the British seem to have the know-how to do period pieces with any kind of style? Extremely susceptible types may shed a tear for the lovers ultimately vanquished by time, but the real tragedy is that if you manage to sit through the 124 minutes of this film 120 minutes of your own life will be sacrificed without the slightest compensation.

    predictable and formulaic

Bad movie. Simply bad. If you have a deeper sense of romance than what most of the modern 'romantic' movies demand, you'll realize the only decent part of this movie is the end.

    Predictable and poorly acted

The 'three-hanky' movie was a real let-down. The acting was so-so and the relationship between the lead characters in the nursing home segments was predictable from the get-go. This could have been a really great flick, but wasn't even a decent rent.

    ZZZZZzzzz

this was an ok movie, but i have many critisims. The plot was annoying, Allie fell in love with Noah, left him, fell in love again. they had lots of arguements, and after a while it was boring to watch. at the end when the old Noah and Allie are together, and he visits her in the middle of the night, they talked to long. also, they didn't explain the fact that Allie wrote the book so she wouldn't forget. i didn't like the part when they did you know what on the floor of the old house. after all these critisims, why did i give it 2 stars and not 1? the actors were good, and so were the costumes.
