Spectacular special effects -- interesting and involving story
This is the first version of Louis Bromfield's book and its very entertaining though pale compared to the book. It has George Brent who is entirely convincing as Ransome and Myrna Loy in a part totally different than her MGM roles. Tyrone Power looks uncomfortable but it's a 20th picture so he's in it. The special effects are convincing and, like San Francisco, way ahead of their time. This was remade in Cinemascope and color as the Rains of Ranchiput which is also very entertaining but not as well cast (it follows the book more closely but not much). Some good but at times sloppy special effects. Best of all--read the book (from the library) which is heads and tails better than either of these movies. It's easy to see why it was a bestseller. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
