This is a live show from the '98 Salzburg Festival. The leads are Jerry Hadley, Catherine Malfitano, Gwyneth Jones, Harry Peeters and Dale Duesing, and all excell in this music. Jones' voice is still in very good shape, though her loose vibrato grates on my nerves. The sound and picture quality are both excellent, and subtitles are in English. This opera is about the debauchery and gluttony in the imaginary city of Mahagonny. The music reminds me of Strauss. If you'd like something simpler and more melodic, get the DVD of Weill's Street Scene. If you like Porgy and Bess you'll like that one as well. Was this review helpful?
