    THE SAINT

I had to take minute to formulate this review before I went completely off the deep end. I may be biased since I named my son after this character Simon and the first person to play him - Vincent Price in the radio dramas, but this movie was crap. Simon Templar was not a spy, but a womanizer and playboy who got himself into trouble helping people with their 'situation" and became their "Saint'or got involved in nefarious plots that he had to try and solve. I will say that in the film he has multiple identities her uses which are all just names of saints, but it works in the plot, yet there is no offbeat humor that Price gave to the original or the sexiness Moore gave in the TV show. The performances were bland and the plot was stagnant, despite who was attached to this film. Philip Noyce, the director has made some good action films, most recently "Salt", but "The Saint" is really a hit and miss. This film came after the okay but not great version of "The Shadow" which tried to meld the radio character with the pulp magazine character with so-so success. "The Saint" would have been a whole lot better with recreating the original characters suave, charm and mystery solving skills.

    I Also Recommend:

    Nice Action Movie

I thought Val Kilmer performed well in this movie, especially with his varied disguises. He has done some good films in the past (of which I consider this film to be one), but seems like Hollywood or maybe by his own desire, hasn't given him the roles to express the talent he posesses. I had seen this film before actually purchasing it on DVD and have always wondered why there wasn't a sequel with Kilmer playing the lead role. Unfortunately too much time has gone by where he would not be the best fit now should another Saint movie be persued.
This movie has alittle bit of everything to keep the viewer watching. That is, the intrique of the new Russia evolving from the past and inter-woven with the action of a dynamic character (played by Kilmer), seeking to enrich himself, but ends up falling in love. I enjoy the movie, but am always wondering about the fate of the characters because the way it ends leaves me wanting a sequel that never came to be. Overall, the film is worth seeing.
