The War: A Ken Burns Film

It is important, before chosing a World War II documentary, that one clearly understand what one is looking for. Are you looking for historical, factual events? Are you looking for dialogue between solders who shared a common event? Are you looking for a "trip down memory lane" from family members, bystanders or any other valued sources deemed credible?

This particular WWII DVD, though well presented and factually accurate, was based more on individuals and their memorable happenings as they fought on different fronts during the war. Again, I pose the questions above.

In no way, would I begin to discredit the value of Ken Burns The War. However, for my own particular interests, I would have preferred a sequential, historical documentary presentation of WWII on both the Eastern Front and the Pacific Rim.

    A Terrible Beauty

I was born after World War II, and grew up in the post-war period. As children, we knew that the Japanese and Germans had been our enemies and had done terrible things, though we weren’t too clear on the specifics. As I grew older and protested our involvement in the Vietnam war, I noticed a certain nostalgia for “the last good war,” when we had nobly fought the fascists. Of course, I knew, on some level, that no war is “good,” but we at least had had good reasons for going to war, it seemed. And I knew that many of our soldiers had suffered terribly in that war "my next door neighbor had fought at the “Battle of the Bulge”" but they had done so in a noble cause. Still, I never got a _sense_ of that war, never _felt_ that war, until I saw Ken Burns’s film. As noble and as necessary as I believe that war was, it was a deep tragedy for our country, for the soldiers who fought, and for their families. And, of course it is easy to say that, but it is much more difficult to show that. This film shows it with a starkness that horrifies while evoking our most tender feelings of empathy and sympathy. I don’t think there’s anything else like it.

    Outstanding must see film

This is an exceptional work that provides an insight on the many views of the war and its effect on all those who lived during these important and dramatic days of our lives.
