A huge letdown

I adore Woody Allen. There is not a single film made by him that has ever dissapointed me, or caused me to doubt his incredible artistic vision and talent. I did not, however, love Vicky Christina Barcelona.

The film is beautiful. It is enchanting, it is romantic. It is sexy and funny, and flirty. It is BEAUTIFUL to watch, as it was filmed in one of the most strikingly gorgeous places ont he planet. Watching VCB, I fell in love, with everything. The actors, the scenery, the costumes, the cinematography. There was not one single element that felt out of place or wrongly implemented. Except for the one thing that I feel ruined the entire film for me: the complete lack of a conclusion.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm a writer. I appreciate a good cliffhanger, I love a story that depends on the audience to pull things together and sort something out for themselves. But that sort of ending is for a film that chalenges the audience, and compells them to view themselves for this film. I don't feel like I as the viewer was forced to involve myself in the story, therefor I did not feel it necessary to conclude what happened.

If it had ended with only the smallest questions and inquiries on your tongue, that would have been one thing. However, it has the distinct feel that a good 50 pages were just yanked out of the script and thrown away. It feels incomplete. I do not think it is finished!

If you are looking for a warm, sexy, aesthetically satisfying film where you can fall asleep 10 minutes till the end and not care what happens to the actors, then this is completely for you. But if you want more meat, and want to know what happens with these romantics... you are better off with something like Jules and Jim, a film that does NOT resolve every aspect, but which makes the unknown work.
