Gay Life before AIDS
One of the most important works of gay literature, this haunting, brilliant novel is a seriocomic remembrance of things past -- and still poignantly present. It depicts the adventures of Malone, a beautiful young man searching for love amid New York's emerging gay scene. From Manhattan's Everard Baths and after-hours discos to Fire Island's deserted parks and lavish orgies, Malone looks high and low for meaningful companionship. The person he finds is Sutherland, a campy quintessential queen -- and one of the most memorable literary creations of contemporary fiction. Hilarious, witty, and ultimately heartbreaking, Dancer from the Dance is truthful, provocative, outrageous fiction told in a voice as close to laughter as to tears. Was this review helpful? Love it, even though not gay or even a man!
No I'm not gay but I know people who are and I love them. My friend Ryan recommended this one (I'll pretty much read anything!) and it is truly a diamond in the rough. Captivatingly sexy and thoroughly accurate as far as gay 70's goes it is a total page turner. Could not put it down. Read with an open mind and heart. Was this review helpful? Like Reality, Only More So
For the generation of urban gay men born between 1945 and 1960, this book virtually defined our coming-out process. We weren't usually as sexually active or promiscuous (or as good-looking!) as the main character Malone, but this book in its lyricism hit all the right notes. Malone's buddy, the been-there-done-it-all Sutherland, is a true literary creation, always true to form and always surprising. This kind of literature is too good for just baby boomers or the so-called gay ghetto. 'Dancer' should be read by anyone with a taste for good literature or a desire to know what gay life in the 1970s was like. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
