excellent

the beginning is a little slow and difficult to get into, but continuing on is a thrill. the story picks up quite nicely and takes some exciting, unexpected turns. I for one could not put the book down!

...and I've read a lot of books. I truly despised the book. I, too, picked it up because of the Dan Brown recommendation, since I was looking for some historical fiction similar to the Da Vinci Code. However, this is as about as far from the Da Vinci Code that one can get. It is dull and pretentious. And the writing is truly terrible. One Good writing should go unnoticed, but I stopped reading mid-sentence many times to gawk at Pearl's style. It is as if the writer is trying to use as many five-dollar words as possible, just to prove he can. The plot is slow and unengaging. Just thinking of this book makes me shudder. I think I'll wait for Dan Brown's Solomon Key to come out instead of attempting to scout out any more good historical fiction.

    Too slow...

I've tried 2x now to get into this book and I just can't seem to stick with it. It's just soooo slow in the beginning and hard to get into the plot. I might give it another try later as it sounds like it's pretty good once you get into it but jeez it's tough to get there!

    I Also Recommend:

    Thrill takes a while

An academic's pace in the build up and level of thrill in the story, but interesting nonetheless.

    Ok, but not great

While the concept intrigued me, and I greatly enjoyed Dante's Divine Comedy, I thought that Mr. Pearl's novel was altogether sluggish and uninspiring. The characters were bland, typecast and predictable. The story itself was good, but the presentation dropped it flat. Pacing throughout was frustrating. I finished the book in a week, but with little excitement. I found it dry and stuffy, though it had several redeeming moments of gory or emotional clarity. Admittedly, I am not a huge mystery fan, but I think that Mr. Pearl dropped the ball on this one. The end is intriguing, but dry. Perhaps Mr. Pearl should leave the real characters out and focus on creating his own. The entirely fictional characters were FAR more interesting and well-developed, particularly the murderer. A respectable first novel from an author with real promise, but not one that I would highly recommend.

    when hell freezes over

For anyone interested in reading The Dante Club, invest the time and research Dante's Inferno beforehand. I had a hard time grasping the dialogue as if it was written in a long forgotten time.I am sure that Mr. Pearl had that in mind as he wrote his novel. I thought the premise of the murders was a great lure for the reader. I think that perhaps Mr. Pearl ventured down one too many dark alleyways in old town Boston.

    A little disappointed

I was a little disappointed with this read. At times, it seemed the author was just using it as a forum to display his knowledge of Harvard and Dante. There were instances when it enhanced the story, but generally, it seemed like reading facts for the sake of reading facts.
