McFadyen just keeps getting better¿
Smoky Barrett returns in the third installment of this series. The FBI Director assigns Smoky to investigate the stabbing death of a woman on board an airplane. The deeper Smoky gets into the investigation, the stranger and stranger the case. Lisa Reid was the daughter of a senator, and she was a transsexual. Soon the team is hot on the trail of a serial killer, the Preacher. The evil killer tortures his victims to learn their deepest and darkest secrets.
Fans will remember FBI agent Smoky Barrett. The man that killed her husband, tortured her, and caused her daughter¿s death left her face disfigured. She has a unique talent for understanding killers. This killer wants to be found but only by Smoky. He wants her secrets.
McFadyen never fails to amaze me with his talent for holding me captive throughout the book. I went without sleep, because I could not lay this book down. The reader does need to be aware of the violence and gore in this book. Be prepared to sleep with the light on for several days after finishing this book. This is psychological thriller at its finest.2 out of 2 people found this review helpful.

A great thriller
The Director of the FBI orders Los Angeles based agent Smoky Barrett to come to Washington, D.C. to work on the case of a young woman stabbed to death while flying on an airplane. Smoky has no idea why her boss wants her to look at the corpse and get involved in this case that is across the continent, but heads east immediately.-------------- Smoky is stunned to learn the victim is daughter of a US senator and that Lisa Reid was undergoing a transsexual procedural. She and her team find clues that lead to a psychopath they call ¿Preacher¿, a serial killer who murders his victims to obtain their innermost darkest sins. The Fed knows that her predator will challenge her to steal her darkest secrets if she does not stop the culprit first.-------------- In her third FBI police procedural (see THE FACE OF DEATH and SHADOWMAN), Smoky is superb as she and readers expect her to be the rodent in a cat and mouse game with a killer who ¿steals¿ secrets from those victimized. Although the passages relaying each victim¿s deepest darkest secrets are fascinating they seem more like cul de sacs rather than feeding the main story line. Still sub-genre fans will enjoy this psychological thriller that digs deep into THE DARKER SIDE of people.----------- Harriet Klausner

Cody does it again!!
The 3rd book in the Smoky Barrett sseries does not disappoint! From start to finish, it is a mind boggling ride into the twisted minds of evil people. Smoky, her team, and all of their families are people who you will come to know and love. Once again Cody has kept me up til the wee hours of the morning as I just HAD to find out the who and why.

Deborah, an avid reader
I cannot recommend this book. I read the excerpt before I purchased this book, because I buy so many books, and I like to make wise choices. The excerpt really intrigued me. However, Mr. McFadyen cannot write women characters. Women don't refer to each other, and I mean EVERY TIME, as "honey love", and "babe". I found this irritating. The big "secret" of the main character was very easy to figure out early in the beginning of the book. I did finish it only because I hate to not finish a book. I felt I must share this review with others.
