The tales of the Norsemen and their frozen home are often overlooked in mythology collections, but this book -- thankfully reprinted after a too-long hiatus -- fills this void like no other. As they did with their collection of Greek stories, the d'Aulaires took the myths of the Norse people and brought them back to vivid life with stunning text and glorious illustrations. Trolls, jotuns, Odin, Thor, Loki, all the gods and goddesses, monsters, Valhalla, Ragnarokk -- they're all there, and then some. Love, jealously, greed, majesty, dread, pettiness, humor, drama and heroism all come through these stories of the all-too-human (and, surprisingly, mortal) denizens of Asgard and the other Norse worlds. This book is a great read for both adults and kids. So glad to see it back; it was one of my favorite books as a child, and it's so good to be able to read it again with my own kids. There are some books that just grab you and always stay with you, and this is one. This one's a keeper.

One of the Greatest Children's (and Adult's) Book Ever Known

I have read "D'Aulaires' Book of Norse Gods and Giants" many times before, and well as her book on Greek Mythology, and I have always found something new every time I read them. A new name, a new place, or even a new story. With her wonderful and creative writing and colorful illustrations, d'Aulaire seems to make these great stories come to life. Young and old alike will find her books enchanting and very hard to put down.

This is a children's classic. Since my child's school uses it in the curriculum, many of the parents would like to have a copy, but must resort to checking it out from the library. It's a shame, because this book is a keeper, with luxurious detailed illustrations which you can gaze at for hours. The stories of Thor, Loki, Sif, Hel, Odin and the trolls and all are as my son has said, 'as good as good as Harry Potter.'
