Really dispelled beliefs I held about the revolution: Louis wasn't guillotined by only one vote. I had found it hard to feel as if I had an understanding of what happened in this very disturbing and confusing time. The index is helpful for cross-reference, but I would have liked a glossary. The characters are vivid (Robespierre's green face is easy to conjure), and the violence is not glossed over, so one isn't able to forget just how savage man can be.
