Charles Martin is a very intelligent writer whose cleverly place

Charles Martin is a very intelligent writer whose cleverly placed insights and humor make you chuckle even in the midst of a drama that two pages later may have you wiping your nose. His characters are deeply layered and intertwined in a plot that is delightfully unpredictable. The first time I read The Dead Don't Dance I was mired in my own pain and it soothed my soul to walk with Dylan as he dealt with his losses. The second time I read it, now some nine years later, I delighted in every nuance of the story, every twist in the plot, the unexpected joy of humor, the sights, smells and adventure I experienced while gripped by the plot and filled with hope and suspense to see how it turned out. This book will make you smile and likely cry a tear or two. But by the end of the story, you'll feel like you went to South Carolina on vacation and sweated in the summer heat, swam in the cool river and invested your heart fully in those around you. Enjoy. And then, like me, you'll want to hurry and read his next novel to take another great vacation with his characters in another of his novels.

    No recommendation

I do not recommend this book. The story line shifts through out the book..wondering from the plot. I continued to read it because it was a selection for the book club I am in. Otherwise I would not have bothered.

Wally Lamb plus Faith If you have read and enjoyed books by Wall

    Wally Lamb plus Faith
If you have read and enjoyed books by Wally Lamb, you will love The Dead Don't Dance. It reminded me very much of both I Know This Much is True and The Hour I First Believed. It follows Dylan Stiles, the main character, as his life spirals as a result of tragedy and his struggle to understand why bad things happen to good people. Most importantly, he does this through the lens of faith in God, without which we are all lost. Excellent read.

    Made me cry!

I'm one of those who cries at movies all of the time, however there has only been one other book that made me cry until now. I cried at this one and with it's sequel "Maggie". For those who think they have it bad.....

    Must Read!

Drawn to the Southern Fiction subgenre, I picked up this book on a whim. The first page alone was so lyrical, I was hooked. I wasn't disappointed as I continued reading -- the emotion is raw, and the broad range of characters with all their quirks and hidden stories are complex with a depth unseen in recent novels. Phenomenal!

    Awesome Debut!

Dr. Martin, you've done it! I remember sitting in a graduate class you helped teach 10 years ago, hearing how you dreamed of becoming a novelist someday. Well, you're living the dream -- and doing a fine job of it, too. Your writing is brutally -- and refreshingly -- honest. Real characters with real emotions that resonate throughout the story make this an engaging read. Bravo to WestBow for not asking you to pull your punches in telling the story like you knew it had to be told. Looking forward to reading 'Wrapped in Rain.' Keep the faith -- and keep writing!
