Ages 10+ Rating 4/5 stars A Deadly Game of Magic by Joan Lowery

    Ages 10+
    Rating 4/5 stars

A Deadly Game of Magic by Joan Lowery Nixon is engaging, mysterious, and suspenseful. Four teens driving home unexpectedly run into a massive rainstorm. They pull up to the only nearby old house. Two people, a man and a woman allow them to come in, but mysteriously leave shortly claiming they are going to a party. The teens are positive that they were not the true owners of the house which led to suspicion. Lisa the main character claims she hears strange noises coming from the dark backroom of the hallway. Even mucho man Bo is too scared to check it out same with smarty Pants Julian. Scary stuff happens in this book like severed heads possible murder and more. The kids are sure that someone is in the house with them trying to force them out of the house.
I would say this book has good pacing and is very well written and paced perfectly. The only thing I would say is that you can’t have four kids in a living room waiting for something to happen almost the whole book. The characters were really well described and had minds of their own as if they were real people. Joan Lowery Nixon is a great you can’t put them down, it's like you are right there in the book watching everything happen. She is a fantastic writer and captures the perfect style of writing in my opinion. So my overall review is it's fantastic, well written, and very suspenseful. I would recommend it for anyone who likes a good mystery.

    A Deadly Game of Magic

Teena leaned on the sideboard and picked up the little guillotine that stood near her hand. 'Lisa,' she said, 'you told us this was part of a set. Where is the big one?' Bo, Lisa, Julian, and Teena were on their way home from a tough loss at their drama club competition when their plans changed. They thought that they would be safe from the horrible Texas storm inside an old house by the road. When they get inside they find out that they aren't the only ones in the house. It's an old magician by the name of Chamberlain the Great's house and he's supposed to be dead. Will they get out and home safe after the storm during the storm? Or will they get out at all? Which will get them first, the storm or the old magician? I recommend this to anyone who likes a good ending and a suspenseful book. This book is good and really exciting. I couldn't put it down and was always reading it.

    Stupendous!

This book was very good. One of the bes books I've read lately. It has a very thick plot but a quite weak ending. It kind of reminded me of a teenage, fantasy version of the Texas Cainsaw Massacre
