The phrase modern classic is overused these days but to say that Death Before Dishonor is on the level with other such classics such as Native Son or the Invisible Man is an injustice to Death Before Dishonor. Filled with lush exquisite prose, Death Before Dishonor is a heart gripping tale of loyalty and the struggle of the African American community. Presenting real life in a fashion that is accessible to young adult and mature audiences alike this story shows that life may be gritty and challenging but is always full of hope -just like the African American condition in modern American society.

Death Before Dishonor is one of the worst books I've ever read main. It starts with ex-con Trill Johnson running from 50. His truck is full of dope and when he gets stopped by a cop who is determined to send him to jail, he runs for his life. While involved in a high-speed police chase complete with helicopters, he runs into a neighborhood shedding his gun and his chinchilla coat in the process. Sunni James, owner of a 24-hour beauty salon, happens to live in the Set he runs into. Since she can't stand to see a brothah in trouble, she plays CAPTIN' Save a CRIMINAL & hides G from the cops right? 'Time out! I don't care who it is, if you're being chased by the PO PO and helicopters there is no way I'm letting you into my crib, please.' But okay, I went with it. So he tosses up this chick right, and now he is runing her. (By the way, he lives with his one-legged girlfriend who took care of his son while he was in jail.) But forget the shorty he's got at home, he sees a new play thang & has to have it. While he and Sunni develop a relationship, his girlfriend--Precious Pay, a gold-digger through and through, but his woman nonetheless--gets left behind and she jealously decides to get her revenge. Weak! I am all for artists who want to be musicians, actors, and entrepreneurs, but you can't just add writer to your name, even though you have some one else doing it for you. 50 come on now? These stories are big on sex, drugs, and violence, and short on plot, character development, and reality. I know they're novellas and can't be as fully developed as a full book, but there was no reason for 50 to waste my time like this. I'll know better than to pick up another G Unit book their Ghost Writers are slingin' like comic books? TO THE G UNIT I SAY, COME ON CREW, GET YOUR G.E.D.s'!!
