DEEP MEDICINE BY WILLIAM B. STEWART, M.D., The Barefoot Surgeon with the Naked Soul

In his book, DEEP MEDICINE, William B. Stewart, MD, gives us one of the best books ever written on the art and practice of healing. With his nurturing presence and guidance, he has a literary bedside manner second to none.

DEEP MEDICINE is a work of high integrity, born out of the author's devotion to healing in all its forms. Before becoming a cofounder of the Institute for Health and Healing in San Francisco, he was a world-renowned eye surgeon. He traveled to third world countries, performing eye surgery in the most humble of places while barefoot. Flashlights, and a naked soul, were the only sources of light. DEEP MEDICINE is more than a book about East, West, North, and South medical practices. It dares to delve into that place beyond culture and tradition to unveil the essence of healing. This essence, according to Dr. Stewart, is in addressing the very component that Western medicine has most neglected. He is talking about nothing less than our spirituality and our souls.

DEEP MEDICINE is written with extraordinary clarity and careful word-choice. Like a fine chef who chooses only the finest ingredients, Dr. Stewart has included the best choice of words and phrasings. The syntax sparkles. This book was written, edited, and published with uncommon care and deference to the reader. Among self-help books, it stands apart as being the most helpful and usable. We are carefully led along the best healing path. The same respect he gives his readers, I suspect, is the same respect he gives his patients. When Moses was in the presence of the burning bush, he removed his shoes, "for the ground beneath him was holy ground." In the same way, William Stewart removes his shoes for the poorest when he operates, for he understands that among the most vulnerable and needy, the ground beneath him is holy ground. As Dr. Stewart says so well: Health is "about human values as well as lab values." If we cannot value ourselves enough to address the needs of our spirits as well as our bodies, the picture is incomplete. He writes: "To be able to make choices and changes that are health creating and sustainable, you must understand and appreciate the influence that lifestyle choices have on your well-being and your capacity to heal." In all this, he acknowledges the challenge that each of us face when it comes to change: "Successful change . . . is about connecting to internal wisdom, trusting your inner voice, and responding to its messages. This is the only way true healing begins, through awakening your inner guiding wisdom."

This is a historic moment. DEEP MEDICINE goes to that place in which only fools have dared to tread. It dares to delve deeper than mind and body to that place we call the soul. At last, medicine seeks to see more deeply than any X-ray or scanning device. DEEP MEDICINE, like deep living, unashamedly and forthrightly, is looking for that inner spark that gives life its life. Dr. William B. Stewart is a pioneer. He has taken healing out of the hands of the "chosen few" and restored it to the community of practitioners and family members. In community, healing most fully takes root and grows. DEEP MEDICINE is the work of a barefoot healer with a naked soul. And through such a soul, there is no greater light, there is no greater path to healing.

Deep Medicine is logical and practical in its approach to self help.

Dr. Stewart's Deep Medicine is a refreshing break from all the quick-fix rhetoric in self help books of the last decade. It's logical and practical in its approach to helping us help ourselves with no gimmicks. You provide the honesty; Deep Medicine will show you the healing path.

    Fantastic! Not to be missed!

I always have a self-help book on my nightstand, but few are as complete and as beautifully written as "Deep Medicine." Dr. Stewart addresses mind, body and spirit without putting himself in the position of guru...which is so, so refreshing. I finished the book feeling particularly self-empowered and centered...ready to take on improving the whole of my wellness without that overwhelmed feeling I usually have after reading similar material. It isn't a quick fix - it's a healthy LIFE book. My mother and cousin loved it too!

This is a great book and it is a must read for all those who are ready to take a deep dive into their personal jouney towards health and healing.

What I love about this book is the practical steps that are provided that help you to assess where you are on your personal journey towards health and healing. The assessment tools are simple yet deep and can help you discover exactly where to start. The diagnosis and prescription for your health is your own, based on your knowlege of self but it is guided by the wisdom of this healer. The deep questions that are posed in the assessment help you to target exactly where to begin!

I also love how he encourages small steps toward change to ensure that the changes that are made are sustainable. This book is an excellent tool and a great resource to use to help you both identify what you need and want, to promote health and healing and to chart a path to begin your life long journey! This book makes a great gift for those who want to begin developing a plan to live a healthier life. I highly recommend it!

Dr. Stewart's Deep Medicine was a delicious read.

I enjoyed my time reading Deep Medicine and look forward to putting the pieces in place for my well-being. I appreciated the opportunities to connect to the world around me through the examples and parallels he drew. The personal "every day" stories that Dr. Stewart included and the self-inquiry at the end of each chapter, with its guided reflections, had me actively involved throughout the book. Deep Medicine gave me the confidence that I am capable of "the journey to balance and wholeness of health." Also, as a parent and teacher, I have gained valuable tools to pass on to my children and students. Thank you Dr. Stewart for sharing your wisdom in this valuable read.
