Surprised how much I enjoyed this book

I have read the Knight series in order and after finishing Jacinda's story (which I loved) I was hesitant about proceeding forward with this one. Why? Because Lizzie always came off as a bit of a stick in the mud during most of the other novels. She was of course a sweet girl and you knew she had a crush on Alec BUT she never came off with the same spirit and fire that made me know I would enjoy Jacinda's story. That said, I really really enjoyed her story. Her character came together and she was more interesting than I thought possible (especially after reading some not so positive reviews). I think what made this story really work was Devlin's character and story line, he was interesting, the story kept going and the chemistry he had with Lizzie was great. I do wish that Ms. Foley would have spent a little more time on Lizzie being courted (as I think that could have opened up a lot of comical and fun situations that she has in other novels) because in the end this story was more about Devlin than it was about Lizzie.
If you liked the other Knight series then you will enjoy this one as well. Solid mix of romance, comedy and drama.
    Looking forward to Alec's story!

    I Also Recommend:

Devlin and Lizzie - I LOVED IT!

Although this romance didn't have the lustful action of some others I have read recently...I loved the story of these two wonderful characters. Devlin (Lord Strathmore or Devil Stratmore), a "supposed to be rogue", with his hot body and brooding alure and Lizzie (vibrantly beautiful with a very caring demeanor), a lady's companion to Devlin's aunt came to be the perfect couple. It was a true delight to read such a well written love story that turned out perfectly. I am sure to keep it in my library of romance books to enjoy again!

One of the best of the Knight series

This is my second time reading Devil Takes a Bride, but you'd think it was my first. Not because I couldn't remember what happened, but because I couldn't put it down! I mean, for the last couple of nights, I rushed home from work, abandoned all housework (not that that was a huge sacrifice, mind you), and read. So absorbed was I with this love story that I was practically on the edge of my seat. I laughed, gasped, teared up, cried. Many times, I just stopped, set the book aside for a moment, and sighed. So lovely and touching. What I love about this book is how perfect, absolutely perfect Lizzie and Dev are for each other. Foley makes their love so believable and truly makes it seem like they're the only ones for each other. When I read this when it first came out, I remember loving it, but I forgot until now just how good it is. I would say that aside from The Duke, this is the best of the Knight series. Hmmm...actually, I LOOVED Alec's story, too. Ok, then, The Duke, Lizzie's story, and Alec's stories are the best. Actually, I love them all, and I love the Ascension series, too.

    Farily Benign

I can sum up this book in one simple word. 'Nice' It has nice characters. It has nice dialogue and a nice plot. It started out well enough but quickly lagged towards the middle before picking up again at the end. I really loved all of Gaelen Foley's books, and I certainly didn't dislike this one, I just found it lacking in the usual spice and flare that Foley's books usually have. Lizzie Carlisle has been a close companion to the Knight family for her entire life. Since the age of nine she has been in love with the roguish and handsome Alec Knight (One Night of Sin). But when she finally confesses her love to him he runs from her. Completely humiliated, she takes refuge in Bath and takes a position as lady's companion to an aging Viscountess, Lady Strathmore. Upon meeting the old woman's handsome nephew, Devlin, both she and the handsome Lord fall for each other. There's an additional subplot about the deaths of Devlin's family as he seeks revenge for their murders. (Kinda boring actually but does give his character alot of depth) If you've been on a losing streak when it comes to finding a good book, Devil Takes a Bride will entertain you but don't expect to be knocked on your ass. (Alec, the youngest and my personal favorite Knight brother, has a pretty big part in this book as he attempts to win back Lizzie's affection from Devlin whom he believes to be unworthy of her. He's a bit misguided in his attempts but I've been a sucker for him throughout the entire Knight Miscellany. If you're a fan of his, like me, it wouldn't hurt to read this book.)

    Very, very, very, awesome!

I've read most of the Knights trilogy, and have fallen for Alice's Lucien, but the other Knight brothers can certainly compete with the spy. On this book however, Lizzie's beau is wonderful, but as a Malaysian, I'd like to make a note that we didn't and still don't have ANY abandoned temples in our jungles. Just some very hungry tigers!

    Great Story

I have recently discovered Foley and I am so glad that I have read. This story was great. I loved lizzie and dev. I have read the whole knight series and I cant wait to read Alec's story next. After reading so many of the knight series you really feel that you know the whole family. It was nice to finally see lizzie get the man of her dreams. Go ahead and read it you will not be disappointed.

The Devil Made Him Do It...

This is the third novel by Gaelen Foley I have read. I also finished ¿The Duke¿ late last year and really, really enjoyed that book and also ¿Prince Charming, which I also liked pretty good. By far, ¿The Duke¿ was the best of the three so far. I liked our heroine Lizzie was strong minded, hard working, independent, warm, loyal and loving. Our hero Devlin was a bit of a dichotomy. In one sense he had been raised as a good son with kindness, love, respect and loyalty. But¿after his family died and he was bent on solving their murder and finding revenge¿he showed some signs of darkness, rage and anger. I liked how Lizzie got Devlin to visit his aunt with a deceptive note. Lizzie forced him to recognize something other than his desire for revenge. The attraction that built between Lizzie and Devlin was appealing during his stay with his aunt and all the outings they had. I thought their first intimate scene the night before he left town was a bit much for a virgin girl her first time time with a man but¿who knows. I was disappointed how quickly he turned away from her two months later when his aunt died and she came to town for the funeral and to comfort him. He became a bit of a stranger as he refused to let her back into his life in case he cared too much and lost someone else. They met up at the reading of the Dowager¿s will. Her will gave ½ her money to Devlin and the other ½ to Lizzie providing they marry within three months ¿ otherwise the money went to charity! Devlin was furious as he needed that money for debts he had accumulated and for his revenge plan. They were attracted to each other but, marriage was not in the cards! Devlin then pulled many stunts to try and sway Lizzie his way - most of them crafty but, none worked. Devlin knew at that point, there was only one girl for him and that was Lizzie. She deserved the title, money and house¿he could only get her through her heart and head. He began courting her the way she deserved and she couldn¿t possibly resist. This story had lots of action going on ¿ Devlin infiltrating the gang that he thought killed his parents, trying to seek revenge for their deaths, wooing Lizzie for both the money and for her spirit and heart to be his, searching for the actress who had witnessed his parents death for clues and answers, challenging Alec Knight for Lizzie¿s hand when he decided he wanted her too. Although there was lots going on¿it all worked and was enjoyable along the way. There was passion, attraction, friendship, fun, danger, intrigue and mystery. I would recommend you pick up ¿Devil Takes a Bride¿ it¿s a really strong story and read. Maybe not quite worthy of five stars but, a solid four it is!

    Love really can heal everything

I have to agree with jessica here. I also wrote Mrs.Foley and told her how much i loved her books. Princess is deffinately one of my favorites. You have no idea how much i was looking forward to lizzie's story. She holds a special place in my heart because i can connect with her personally. I was not dissapointed at all, it is a beautiful love story between a shy but loving young woman, and a lost and bitter man. Each has experienced heartbreak, and through each one's hardship they finally learn to heal each other, and find trust, but not without a little adventure of course. this is without a doubt a must read. If you love a good romance, you will love all her books. Each is unique in their own way, but something unforgettable.

    Excellent!

England, 1805, seventeen-year-old Devlin Kimball had been sitting in detention awaiting the arrival of his displeased parents and little sister Sarah when the dean walked in to inform him that his Aunt Augusta was en route to pick him up. His parents and four-year-old sister had 'an accident'. Half way to the school they had stopped at an inn to rest. The inn had caught fire, killing 47 people, including his family. The Dowager Viscountess (Augusta) Strathmore did her best with Devlin, but he eventually went adventuring on the high seas, spending his rage on the elements. ................................. London, 1817, Devlin 'Devil', Lord Strathmore, had uncovered the dark truth about the fire at the inn. The fire had been deliberate! He also knew that one or more of the morally twisted gentlemen in the 'Horse and Chariot Club' were to blame. Devlin vowed to learn the names of the guilty and kill them. Marriage never entered the equation. But Aunt Augusta's will changed that. ........................... Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Carlisle had been lady's companion to Augusta, who had been affectionately known to all as 'Lady Ironsides'. Knowing how much the old lady loved her nephew, Lizzie had tricked Devlin into visiting only weeks before the lady died. Devlin had been annoyed at Lizzie at first. But his aunt had been the only person Devlin cared for anymore and understood, after awhile, why Lizzie had done it. Both of them were shocked when the will was read. The problem for Lizzie was that she had already been through a broken heart before with Lord Alec. (The brother of Lizzie's best friend in the previous book titled 'LADY OF DESIRE'.) The last thing she wanted was another man in her life! The problem for Devlin was that if anyone at the club realized his actually had come to care for Lizzie, she would be in grave danger! ........................... ***** EXCELLENT! I can tell you this much more without spoiling anything and I only tell because the reader knows this from the beginning: Sarah was saved from the fire by someone, Ginny, and raised for the next twelve years in Ireland. Though Sarah recalls nothing, Ginny wishes to return Sarah to her only living relative, now that he has finished traveling. First though, Ginny must make sure Devlin is not like the men in whose company he keeps. ............................ Author Gaelen Goley has done an incredible job writing about the Knight family. (Alec & Jacinda's family.) Readers will have glimpses into the lives of a few past characters as well. You do NOT have to read any of the previous books to thoroughly enjoy this one. The plot is strong, the writing perfect, and the story moves along at a good pace. You will not find yourself getting bored at any point. I highly recommend the entire series! *****

    As usual, Ms. Foley delivers!!

I am in the process of reading all of Ms. Foley's books. I had actually wrote her to tell her how much I loved her book, 'The Princess.' She wrote me back and encouraged me to read this book when it came out. I want to congratulate her on yet another good story. She does not disappoint. The love story between Lizzy and Devlin is so sweet. He, a lost lonely young man and she, a lonely young woman who can't seem to find a family of her own. What a match that these two found eachother and love! If you buy this book, you won't be disapointed. What a story! I recommend all of Ms. Foley's books. I am currently working on Lord of Fire and then Lord of Ice. Looking forward to finishing them! I am also looking forward to Alec Knights story!!! That ought to be something.

    Good romance

In 1805 actress, Ginny Highgate flees the abuse of her lover Lord Quentin ¿Damage¿ Randall hoping to find solace with her birth name Mary Harris and her birthplace in Ireland. She took teenager Johnny with her because Quentin¿s pal Carstairs was sodomizing the lad. At an inn still in England, Quentin catches up to her. When scholarly aristocrat Stephen Strathmore intercedes on Mary¿s behalf, Quentin shoots him. Carstairs cleans up the mess by setting fire to the inn. Stephen¿s son Devlin is devastated when the news reaches him at school that his parents are dead and assumed so is his sister.......................... In 1817, Devlin has gathered enough information about the deaths of his family to know that Damage, Carstairs the Pervert and a third pal killed them. He pretends to be a wastrel so that he can befriend his enemies, but panics when Aunt Augusta¿s companion sends him a note that she is very ill. He rushes to see his aunt, but he finds her healthy. Angry he takes Elizabeth Carlisle to task though he also admires her loyalty to her employer. He soon falls in love with Elizabeth who reciprocates his feelings, but first there is the matter of three killers.......................... Fans will appreciate this exciting Regency romantic suspense starring two delightful protagonists. Devlin is very complex while Elizabeth is a nurturing soul. Readers will want them to make it while also hope that justice is served. It would be fool¿s Foley for sub-genre fans to miss this delightful Hawkscliffe companion piece (Elizabeth once hoped that Alec Knight would love her as she did him).....................
