If you like the film A League of their Own, you will enjoy this
If you like the film A League of their Own, you will enjoy this book! If you like American 20th century history, you will enjoy this book! If you enjoy baseball/softball, you will enjoy this book!
Pepper Paire Davis played for the All American Girls Professional Baseball League for 10 years and detailed her life before, during and after her tenure as a professional baseball player. Her experience in the League led to her becoming a technical adviser to the film A League of their Own.
At times, her story-telling could be a bit repetitive, but that only added to the charm of the book. Reading it felt like she was sitting across the table from me telling me her life story. It did not at all feel as though I was reading a documentary.
As someone who played competitive softball for 15 years and loved reading about the League, I was enthralled with Pepper's story. It's also amazing how many injuries and heartaches she was dealt: ball injuries, car accidents, deaths of loved ones. She was a very strong woman, that's for sure.
I learned of this book earlier this month when I read of her death (2/2/13). After reading her memoir it's a bit extra bitter sweet to think about how this woman is no longer among the living. Especially, when reading the last couple of chapters about how much she gave back to society. It made me wish I was able to meet her, even as unrealistic as that would be.
On a side note, I too grew up in Southern California and could easily picture the locations she mentioned. It was nice to think of my homeland as it was in decades past.

Good luck at the women's league
If you liked the movie, you should like an inside story of the women's professional baseball league by one of the best players ever, Pepper Paire Davis. It also gives you a look at what Pepper thought of the movie and her involvement with it. The book drags, but overall, it's a good read. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
