The most satisfying read...

This was a weird book. It started out almost as if missing half of it or it was part 2 in a series. You just felt lost like they were talking about things that happened and you werent a part of it. There was no explanation for anything, while the premise might have been good, a little more explanation would have made this book much better. As is, it sucked. Woild not recommend at all. Terrible.

    OK

I believe I picked this up as a free Friday selection. A future "sy-fy" detective story. Fairly enjoyable although some parts I just didn't get, like Walter's insomnia. Some parts just a little too unreal. Perhaps if I'd read the 1st of the series in advance.....???? I believe the original copyright was in the late 1980's and 260 approx. pages.

    Meh

While the writing was good, the content was not very engaging. I found the characters to be like bad actors. They were not relatable. They took away from a possibly interesting story.

Somewhat interesting situations and premice but weak character development.
I really wanted to know more about these characters so that I could care about
what happened to them. This book has a lot of potential.

I enjoy science fiction, and I enjoy mysteries, so you can imagine how disappointed I was with "Dover Beach" to drop a two-star rating.

Bowker writes well; I enjoyed his prose. He does not, however, tell a story well. This story should have interested me. It did not.

The characters are far more flat than they are developed. There was no one in this book that I cared about; no one that I would want to meet in real life. And the atmosphere of the novel was, well...missing, which is odd, since it's set in a post-nuclear war era.

The plot had a workable and promising foundation, but I found the protagonist (a 22-year-old detective), to be a dud. He had no personality, and came by his information far too easily. There was no "detecting" in this detective story. Worst of all, the author committed the cardinal sin of mystery writers--the book was predictable. The only mystery to this "mystery," was its title.

    Maybe better with work

The author tries, he really does, to emulate an epic style. But beginning a tale in medeas reis does not an epic make. The plot was twisted and frequent trips into the irrelevant made it difficult to read.

    Boring

This was so choppy and dragged on about nothing, I couldn't get past the first 50 pages.
