    wake up!!

From what I have read, Ms. Shields suffered from a 'fever' during labor, which is commonly associated with an epidural and the rapid drop in blood pressure (also due to the epidural) which put her baby in distress. She ended up having a c-section, which should be the focus of her public outreach. When a woman has a c-section, the 4 million year old evolutionary mothering hormonal blueprint gets switched off. The depression was a result of traumatic surgical birth, and a likely separation from her baby, immediately following. I commend her honesty, but wake up! It's outrageous that she is planning to have yet another c-section instead of demanding a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). I have empathy for her experience, but the focus should be on the reason she had the depression. PPD is unheard of in cultures that give birth at home unmedicated, assisted by midwives. There are definitely times when c-sections are appropriate, but we are seeing c-sections done in epidemic proportions,a 27% national average. It's alarming!!!
