As wonderful as ever

I've been reading the Pern books almost as long as the first one was published.

I am so pleased to find the Pern series will continue with her son Todd.
I loved this new 'chapter' in his Pern world as much as I enjoy his mother's Pern.
I do hope to read more amd soon.
Actually I can recommend all the Pern books. They are wonderful for adults and a wonderful series for teens.

As yet another reviewer who has lived in the world of Pern for years, I desperately wanted to like each and every book written by Todd. I slogged through his previous books, and while I didn't love them, they were a tolerable addition to the series. However, this book was so unbearably bad that I only made it about four-fifths of the way through before I finally threw in the towel.

As others have mentioned, the writing and characterization is abysmal. I found multiple outright errors that any editor should have caught immediately. And the scenes were so repetitive that I'm sure I skimmed a good third of the book.

What bothered me the most, however, was the complete apathy the riders seemed to have for their dragons. The best part of Pern has always been the rider/dragon bond. Here, Todd has riders offering to sacrifice their dragons for the sake of their lover, or to just give them away to make someone else feel better. Really? In the previous books, most can't even survive the loss of their dragon, but now they're treated like an old pickup you loan out to a friend over the weekend. Horrifying.

And while I'm about as sexually open-minded as they come, the pedophilic bed-hopping creeped out even me. I can't imagine there are that many women around who don't mind trading men like baseball cards. And wasn't Terin something like twelve years old when she started sleeping with that bronze rider? I felt violated and disturbed just reading about it.

I hope, for the sake of the series, that Todd just gives up on this whole experiment and finds something else to do with his free time. Thanks to him, Pern will never be the same for me, and I don't mean that in a good way.

I wish Anne would give the series to someone who can write.

I keep hoping that Todd will get better with practice but it seems to only get worse with time. The book rambles without clear direction. The author keeps trying for a cliffhanger to get the reader to come back for the next book but the answers to the problems are obvious and anticlimatic for example, tada there is a cure. The subplots are weak and tedious and clearly written by a man with polygamy fantasies. At the very least, have mom read it before its published, maybe she will pick up on the obvious errors with the plot.

    Not up to Pern Standards

Todd does an adequate job of incorporating the the ideas of Pern, but lacks the skill of his mother when it comes to developing a story line and characters. The strength of the Pern series has always been the characters.... After several books, Todd has shown that he lacks this skill and instead has to go for ongoing "world is about to end" scenarios. First it was a human plague, then a dragon plague, now lack of dragons. I have been a loyal fan of Pern since the beginning, and sadly, I must say, this was my last.
