Last December (December '09), I decided I wanted to buy a drawing book, instead of using uninformative online guides. So, I browsed around the Barnes and Noble website until I stumbled upon this book. I was pleased it had a preview, so I looked at the preview and drew a few pictures from it. I showed the pictures to all of my friends and family, and they were amazed. When I got the book, I was even more pleased, and spent a whole day drawing things from it. Most of the material inside is pretty straight forward--it even shows you how to use complex programs like Photoshop and Corel Painter. (It taught me how to use both)

I've showed this book at all of my friends--it's even helped a few of them turn from decent artists to great artists.

Sure this book teaches how to draw rather cute creatures but it's not manga! It's too American styled! Manga art is much more simple or at times cutely detailed. In this book, the artist uses lines that are too heavy, a very common style in American art. I looked through this whole book and there was only ONE small drawing that was sort of manga like. As well as the line art style being too heavy, the coloring is also very American styled; the kind of coloring you'd find in the Sunday comics from your newspaper. In every manga I've read (and I read a LOT of manga) that has had a colored page appear, it's colored often fairly realistically and very beautifully. I'd also like to bring up that along with the coloring and line art being too American, the artists overall drawings don't resemble manga animals. Once again I say, it all looks too American!!! For example, the artist drew a gijinka (human with animal features [like fox or cat]) ears and a tail. It looked like crap. I found this book very irritating. Don't buy it if you're trying for real manga style! Honestly, the best book you can buy that will teach you is an actual manga book. Mangas like Inubaka or Fruits Basket are great for animal reference!
