not for those with a weak stomach....
It took major effort on my part to actually put this book down once I picked it up. I just lost myself in this story! Dreamcatcher contains a lot of thrills to say the least. There are UFO's, aliens, a strange virus and an even stranger parasite that flourishes in the human intestines. There's a wonderful boy with Down's Syndrome and four boys (who grow to be men) who are connected to him telepathically. The plot of Dreamcatcher is marvelously strange and it works! The character of Duddits (boy with Down's Syndrome) is one I will never forget. He is so beautifully innocent and sweet and yet he holds the weight of the world on his shoulders. Stephen King, without a doubt, shows off his knack for storytelling in Dreamcatcher. A word of warning: beware those of the sensitive stomachs.

very good
i thought this book was very good. some parts were funny, some graphic, sometimes it actually made me itchy. i liked needful things, but i think this was better. it slowed a bit between pages 400 and 500, introducing some new people to the story but then picks right back off non stop to the ending. great book

A Bit Graphic, But GREAT
Eight Hundred Ninety Six pages is a troubling length of pages to finish. After around three weeks i finally finished it. This is a great book and should be treasured by many readers to come. ANd certainly not my final Stephen King. Probably just one of my first!

Excellent science fiction
Though at times the world seems more like a place filled with terrible marmalade, unselfish acts occur to remind everyone that good exists. Take the town of Derry where high school bullies regularly pick on Duddits, humiliating him in nasty ways like stripping him of his clothes and making him sit on or eat dog excrement. Four younger lads (Harry, Beaver, Jonesy, and Pete) rescue the Downs Syndrome boy from his tormentors and realize they like Duddits. For years afterward, the quintet formed a tight knight group to protect Duddits, who can telepathically communicate with them.
When the awesome foursome grow up, they leave town and Duddits behind, but get together every year for hunting (minus Duddits). However, this time their get together is filled with danger as a spaceship containing unfriendly and dangerous passengers has landed. The government quarantines the area, planning to kill any living creature isolated in the infected zone. However one alien has snatched the body of Henry with plans to spread his fungi race around the globe.
Stephen King provides his zillion fans with another exciting tale centering on hostile aliens threatening to take over the planet. DREAMCATCHER stars heroic people especially Duddits, who is willing to die to stop the destruction of humanity so that his friends can live. Mr. King has written an entertaining suspense thriller that shows he remains a force in fiction.

Great!
I originally read this a few years ago, and yes it is long! But that's what makes it so good, the in-depth story telling in this. I even just reread it and found myself unable to put it down.

Could Have Been Better
The thing that I noticed about Stephen King lately is that he is absolutely outstanding (Bag of Bones) or just too long and drawn out like this book. I feel the plot had a lot of potential but if condensed would have been more effective. I would be reading and getting really into the story and then it would switch to a different area and would just drag on. Would have liked more focus on the friends and the byrus and less on the dynamics of the military.

great fun
This book was great to read, but tended to be a little confusing at times when he flashed back and forth between the present and the past.I won't go into the synopsis, as this story has been out long enough, and the reader can look up the other reviews if they are not familiar with it. I don't want to rehash what has already been written.

The characters I found well developed, but not overly so, without the long verbose ramblings he sometimes can give. It moved along well.
I particularly liked the interplay between Jonesy and Mr. Gray, and the phychological games going on, rather than the blood and gore.
As a reader, I enjoyed the book much more than the movie, as it went into more explaination on what the aliens are, and what the meaning behind the dreamcatcher is, which is not addressed as much in the movie, but I still enjoyed the film, until the end. Of course. There is a bit of variation there, which gets worse in the last 15 minutes or so of the film.
Often I cannot get into many of King's books because they can drag on with a lot of secondary things going on with his characters, or just filling out the story a little too much for my liking. I like some description, but I also like it balanced with a story that moves along well, without turning several pages saying "where is the interesting part?" This book fits the bill for me.
All in all, I enjoyed it a lot. -
Not for the easily disgusted
This book is a horror fans dream. Everything you look for this book has. From aliens to blood and gore it's in there. In the begining it's just a background of the main character's lives. Then everything changes for the better. More people are introduced along with new surroundings. From there on hold on to your seats as Stephen King does what he does best. He makes you not want but need to keep reading. Dreamcatcher is a book that you shouldn't hesitate to own

Great for sci-fi fans.
The Dreamcatcher by Stephen King is a horror novel that revolves around the life of 4 young adults; Henry Devlin, Joseph"Beaver" Clarendon, Pete Moore, Gary "Jonesy" Jones. As children the four of them form a very special bond with a little boy with Down syndrome, Douglas "Duddits" Cavell. This special bond becomes vital to their survival once they become adults. During an annual hunting trip the four of them take together to Maine, a mysterious quarantine takes place. A lot of rumors are spread, including one that involved a crashing spaceship and an extraterrestrial virus. Soon enough the four of them begin to realize what is happening around them and they all become involved in this catastrophe. The bond they made with "Duddits" plays a very important part in their survival of it. The military takes an immediate role in fighting this strange force. The operation is being led by a man called Colonel Abraham Kurtz, with Captain Owen Underhill as second in command. The four friends must fight this force, and while the intentions of the military are good, they get in the way of Henry and his friends who might be more apt for the job than the military.

I recommend this book if you're the kind of person that is interested in mystery and science-fiction. This book will take you through the lives of all the characters, how they each have a very intense bond with each other and how even though they are separate people they play a vital role in each other's destiny.
This book is not only science fiction and horror but it can also be viewed as a allegory to life and our fears, and how we must fight our fears in order to survive. Also, there is the presence of extraterrestrial beings, so if you're interested in knowing how an alien thinks or do, this book might peak your interest. King's book will always leave you thinking for weeks, his books make you reflect about your life in general, and how you can see some of it in his novels. However I must also warn you that it is rather a slow book, so if you're the kind of person that likes to get into the action right away this book might not be right for you. If you enjoy getting to know the main characters and their backgrounds, King does an excellent job doing that in this novel. -

IT WILL KNOCK YOU FLAT!!!
This book took me on a ride through the endless, twisted panthion of Stephen King's imagination. The story twisted and turned, and kept me on the edge of my seat. There were many ups and downs, and I kept wondering what kind of conclusion this man could have conjured up to really finish us off. This book makes you beg for the dynomite and then without warning it gives it to you. This is truly one of King's best works and I give him a standing ovation on this outstanding achievement. It is stories like these that cement his status as a writer of a lethal calibur. I have always loved this man's work and I hope he continues to produce mind shattering and epic stories like this for many years to come. I also saw the movie but sadley I feel it didn't do the book justice. Never the less I am a Stephen King fan and I always will be. LONG LIVE STEPHEN KING!!

Dreamcatcher
An exhilarating horror novel by Stephen King called Dreamcatcher caught my attention from the very beginning. Henry, Pete, Jonesy, and Beaver were friends since their early childhood. Together they confronted some bully guys that were attacking a little child with special education. This great act brought them together in a very strange way. Somehow they could read and hear each other¿s thoughts and could see amazing things. They decided to call their visions as ¿the line¿ and their strange `powers¿ as SSDD. Every time they thought of SSDD, they were able to connect to each other and to their friend that gave them their amazing `powers¿. Every year they had a reunion, a week in the year that they rested from their contemporary lives and went to hunt in the woods of Maine. However, this year a disoriented stranger stumbled into their camp site. He mumbled something about been lost in the woods for a couple of days but he did not show sign of it, except for a red mark under his left eye that kept getting bigger. Part of his incoherent conversation was something about lights in the sky and strange creatures in the woods. The foursome got plunged into a horrifying struggle with another world¿s creature. Their only chance of survival is hidden in their past with their powers and their special friend. The only way they can find their way out is through the Dreamcatcher. Stephen King did a wonderful job with this novel. Even though it was lengthy, they whole novel was full a very descriptive, detailed, and colorful language. King could make me feel the horror. My imagination was not limited at all because King provided all the devices necessary to make of this novel a piece of amazing fictional literature. I would widely recommend it to anyone who has read previous works of Stephen King, who likes fictional, catchy, descriptive, horror novels, or to someone that really likes to read. The only downside of this novel was that because it was so long, sometimes it was hard to keep up with the reading. However, after all King did not disappoint me with this novel.
