I love historical novels and was totally entranced by The Dressmaker. With 439 pages I was interested in each and was sad when the story was over. I was a little confused about the location in England of some of the homes that Ellen lived in and the speech and slang seemed a little off in some parts of the story. But these were such slight imperfections that it didn't detract from the story at all. I loved the descriptions of the clothing and homes and how they were decorated. These descriptions bring the story to life. Although Ellen had a very sad and trying life for most of her years she worked hard and made good friends and her family loved her to make the story happy at the same time.

Curl up in a comfortable chair and enjoy!

It is the day of Ellen Gowan's 13th birthday party as Posie Graeme-Evans novel "The Dressmaker" opens. Ellen's journey from innocent schoolgirl, raised in modest circumstances by her loving parents to to Madame Ellen, dressmaker to the leading ladies in England's society, is an adventure not to be missed. Reminiscent of a cross between Jane Austen and Phillipa Gregory, the trials and tribulations, sorrows and joys make for an easy, enjoyable read. This is a rainy day indulgence kind of book - implausible and predictable at times, but Ms. Graeme-Evans tells a good tale overall and makes you sorry to see the end - which comes a bit abruptly.

    great read!

If you love historical fiction and a strong female lead, you will like this book. The character development pulls you in until u have to finish the book. I wish the ending didnt leave the audience wondering.

    Enjoyed the story

This book took time to read since I had to keep using the dictionary to find obscure and alternative meanings of words. She uses language and objects of the period. Also French. Very intriguing. There are areas I did find weak however it was a fun read.
