I thouroughly enjoyed this book and found the characters to be interesting and I wanted to know more. The story is written in both first and third person and from different character perspectives. Their are many mysteries woven through this book and it has a rewarding ending although I would have liked to find a little more about the title character's future. When all the secrets are finally revealed you will be surprised by the outcome. I recommend this book for anyone wanting more that the regular chick lit that is out there.

I just can't agree with all the glowing reviews here. The book was confusing and jumped around quite a bit, which is fine if there is a big payoff at the end. But, alas, I discovered that I had correctly anticipated the ending before even reading half the book. I found the plot set-up of the last 50 pages or so to be too contrived and then the book just sputtered to a predictable end. What a disappointment!

Not what I thought it would be

Since I had read (and loved) many other books that Oprah had on her book club, I checked this book out of my local library. Thank goodness I didn't buy it. I didn't have trouble follow the book, what with the way it jumped from person to person, past to present, but it just wasn't interesting. Events are just dragged out and repeated over and over again until you want to scream. I forced myself to read all of it, if just to find out what happened to Mathilda and in hopes that the book might perhaps improve. Boy was I disappointed. The ending wasn't what I had hoped. All in all, Oprah is a reliable source on good books. I suppose 'Drowning Ruth' was just the exception to the rule.

    Pitiful Characters

This is by far the worst book I have read in a very long time. This author has put together the most pitiful set of characters in the history of characters. The story line is extremely weak. You read the entire book only to find out that the main character has a serious case of poor mental image and envies her sister's life. Big deal. Don't waste your time or your money - PLEASE.
