    more from this reviewer

Very good for helping me to fall asleep

I should have read the back cover more carefully. It warned that there was only one exciting chapter, and that the rest was intellectual drama. I thought it was overly-intellectual, and I have an MBA. The characters' thoughts were often circuitous and obtuse making for difficult reading. And by difficult, I mean hard to get to the next chapter. Talk, talk, talk about self-reflection, self-doubt, yada, yada, yada. It's suppose to be a murder mystery, but even the revealing climax (and the only real action) was hardly more than a small berm. I would not recomment this book for anything more than a book club where you can tear apart the characters every week. That seems the author's intent. But you should be warned that you won't find much substance in any of the characters.

This book takes a few chapters to get into. I found at first that the relationships were a bit confusing and wasn't sure I really cared but then really got into the story. The characters themselves are not likable which I think made it harder for me to continue reading but as the clues unfold and I learned more about their past, I found that I really did want to know who did it and how this all would end! I will be recommending this book to others that I know. I have not read anything else by this author but will be looking for more!

    A reviewer

Almost to many charactors. You really get to know each of the friends with all their moods. A mystery till the end.

    Great twist

I thought this was a very good book with a twist at the end that I did not see coming. I love a good mystery and this one fit the bill. Well done!

    Surprising disappointment

I'm a big Jane Smiley fan, but I am knocked flat that she could have written so bad a novel. As it devolved, I found myself saying, 'She wrote this while very young, and she wasn't writing what she knew.' The plot twists are implausible, the characters falsely drawn. I'm just glad I've read her subsequent novels.
