Earthbound

A ghost story with a twist that only Matheson could deliver. Similar to his other books, the story is slow to get going, but has great character development. The couple visiting their honeymoon location in an effort to rekindle their stressed marriage was not the most interesting start to a book. The husband's affair and the wife's lack of emotion are nothing spectacular either. However, when the reasons for the affair and lack of emotion start to bubble up, it becomes quite interesting, not to mention the ghost the husband comes across. There is a lot of erotica in the book, which I wasn't expecting, but not over done to the point the story is lost or it becomes stale to read. The ending is a little to story book and drawn out. I could have done without the last page regarding the ghost's resolution, it was a little too something for my tastes. I really enjoyed the writing style and characters, yet it is not one of the author's best books. Short book and a quick read, not a keeper though.

Earthbound is predictable but an easy read

I love Richard Matheson. Let me state that at the outset. Bid Time Return, I Am Legend, and The Shrinking Man are my favorites. Earthbound does not live up to those titles. It is a very good book, but not a great book. I recommend it for all of Matheson's fans, and it is great to see that Barnes and Noble has decided to carry several of his books on their store shelves again.

It could have been better

I L.O.v.E Richard Matheson books. I think he is a very great author, he also writes very well. He writes with very precise detail and excellent wording. But this book, I was disappointed. He could have told a little more about the ghost background or history. But he didn't. He wrote just enough. I didn't like how the book ended. The beginning was great but slow to come to excitement. I L.O.V.E the action that was in the book. I also enjoy sexuality that went on as well.It could have been and should have been a little more detail brought to that particular stages of the book. It was not scary, it did not have me begging for more. It was just plan simple straight to the point.

tense ghost story

In Southern California, David and Ellen Cooper recognize that their two decade plus marriage is collapsing, but neither want to give up on the other. They agree to a change of scenery to see if they can renew their vows. Thus the couple lease a beach cottage in Long island. --- Not long after settling into their temporary retreat, Mariana comes out of nowhere to see David. He is immediately enchanted by the beautiful ephemeral females. However, when he thinks lucidly he feels guilty that he has illicit thoughts for another woman while trying to salvage his marriage. Still guilty or not he is unable to resist Mariana¿s lure and they make love in a secret room in what has become hell house; David turns increasingly despondent that he cheated yet obsessed for wanting more while Ellen cannot fathom what is happening to him. Every time he and Mariana make love, his depression and need intensify as she sucks away the very core of David¿s essence from him until she threatens Ellen. Deep inside his depraved soul his heart still loves Ellen and no one including a succubus that has psychically controlled him through sex will prevent him risking his life to keep his beloved safe. --- EARTHBOUND is a tense ghost story filled with suspense that grips the audience wondering who Mariana is. In some ways the story line is a love story as David regains some of his equilibrium and what defines him as human once he realizes Mariana menaces Ellen. Though the sexual encounters demonstrate Mariana¿s power over David, this interrupts a terse ghost story in which the incredible shrinking soul must fight his obsession to save his beloved.--- Harriet Klausner

Not very frightening

At only 220 pages (hardcover), the author never really gets you interested in the characters. Maybe because it also read like a short story rather than novel. This is hardly a ghost story that you need to read with the lights on. Save your money and check this book out from the library.
