Terrific With Exceptional Message - you'll love it!
Michael Rosen has managed to capture the essence of faith and friendship in this beautifully illustrated book, in the four main protagonists whose faith is taken seriously but not somberly. Was this review helpful? In Elijah, the evangelical woodcarving barber; in Michael, the young Jewish boy who is Elijah's neighbor; and in Michael's parents, whose thoughtfulness in helping Michael interpret the nature of one's relationship with God and friendship; they all come together to provide a fascinating glimpse into each of their perspectives.
As a Jewish kid named Michael myself, whose spiritual journey has included passage through the evangelical Christian tradition and on into becoming a liberal Christian minister, I was captivated by Michael Rosen's honesty with the characters, letting them be who they really are, and by the ultimate end of being respected and honored for the presence of friendship and love they brought to one another.
A great read, and more personally, a real tear-jerker as it recalled for me my recently late (and very Jewish and very beloved) mother, who loved Christmas.
