    A good read

I bought this only because it was recommended by my daughter. It took me a while to get into it, but I really enjoyed the book. I got very involved with the Nilson family and all the other characters and felt their journey. I'm starting on the second in the series now and enjoying it, too. The author does an excellent job of giving the reader a feel for what the Swedes were going through.

    Excellent Series!

This series gives an excellent overview of the immigration of this family from Sweden. Would highly recommend to anyone who is interested in learning more about Swedish ancestors and the beginning of their lives in the USA.

Fiction and Non-fiction in one book. You want to read more.

If you have any interest in the reasons for why the Swedes emigrated this is the book!
Moberg is descibing the landscape as it really was, I have lived in Smaland, Sweden part of my life and all fences in this part of Sweden are made of stones that were picked up from the fields the farmers wanted to use. There are still a lot of stones!
Still it is written like a novel and it is exciting to follow all the problems each of the persons had in Sweden which is different for each one of them and why and how they made their decisions to emigrate.
Moberg has a way of making you feel like you are one of the persons and you just do not want to put the book down until you have read it to the end.

    Great book!

I chose Swedish Immigration for a high school Junior Theme research paper. I chose The Emigrants because it looked interesting and fit perfectly into my thesis. While reading the book I fell in love with the characters and the adventures that they undertook on their voyage to America. I laughed, I cried, I truly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the next books in the series.

    A classic in Swedish literature

This book has truly been a classic in Swedish literature ever since it was first published about fifty years ago. Even though the characters are fictional, the story in itself tells more about the situation for the Swedish emigrants who came to America then any historical book of facts. The author did an extensive historical research before starting his work on the ¿Emigrant¿ epic. I would highly recommend it for all Swedish-Americans who would like to know something about their heritage.
