This two disc compendium is simply great. I am not really an Opera fan, but the singing, conducting, and even the sound is worth every penny. Just some high-points"Va pensiero" with Solti and the Chicago Symphony and Chorus, the Prelude from La traviata with John Pritchard and the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Joan Sutherland singing "Caro Nome" from Rigoletto. Jussi Bjorling gives a virtuoso performance of "Di tu se fedele" from Un Ballo in Maschera - I didn't understand one word he said, but the singing and his diction is fantastic. Leontyne Price is stirring in the "O patria mia" from Aida - Solti and the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro dell'Opera di Roma play beautifully; Montserrat Caballe's run up the scale in "Lo sguardo avea degli angeli" put a huge grin on my face. Note, everything, I repeat everything that has the stupendous Carlo Bergonzi ( I had never heard of him until this disc) in it is great; but just to tempt you, listen to the duet he has with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in "Dio, che nell'alma infondere" from Don Carlo. The singing is impeccable from both parties and Solti really knows how to accompany singers. The "Dies Irae" from Verdi's Requiem is emotionally wrenching! I can't leave without mentioning Angela Gheorghiu in "Pace, pace, mio Dio." Her performance had my complete attention from the first note. If I had the funds I would purchase every piece represented on this disc.
