Evening Star’s is a unique book. It made me sad that Averil and Nina had such a hard time communicating throughout the book, even though it all works out in the end. I thank God my own mother is not flakey and irresponsible like Bonnie. The whole book made me think a lot about the dynamics of my own family and makes me appreciate them all the more. So, a very good read, and I enjoyed the characters because they were so different.

I discovered Susan Mallery's books a little over a year ago, and I am completely hooked!
Since then I have read every book by Susan I can get my hands on.
I have asked our public library to acquire many of her books, and they have added 32 of her books so far! I
have a lot of reading to do!  The Blackberry Island series pulled me in immediately. Her characters are complex,
both sympathetic and annoying at the same time. Evening Stars perfectly illustrated how circumstances can
form perceptions within us at an early age that become our reality long after it is time to let them go.
It was easy to see why Nina thought her family needed her to take care of them. They expected her to do it
while at the same time they resented her.  She captured the dynamics of a dysfunctional family life with
    compassion and humor.
