An introduction to the game of chess

This is a good basic chess book, but more suited to an older elementary school child (4th or 5th grade, perhaps) than a first or second grade chess player.

This book is a very good introduction to the game of chess. Not

This book is a very good introduction to the game of chess. Not only does it teach you how to play, but the majority of the book instructs you on how to become a good player. If you master the material in this book (if you understand it all and are able to apply most to all of it to your games) you can almost certainly reach a 1200 Elo or a little over. You may have to read it more than once (as there’s a lot of stuff to digest), but after you understand the material and have played several games, you will be able to beat almost any casual chess player. This book teaches the absolute beginner how to play and how to become quite good. It’s a great introduction to the game and puts you on the right track to becoming “really” good.

Learn how to play chess from scratch

The 'EVERYTHING CHESS BASICS BOOK', written at an adult reading level will teach the absolute beginner how to play a basic game of chess. The author (a former employee of the United States Chess Federation) is a well informed player and fairly good writer. Perhaps a few items might have been arranged alittle more efficiently, but overall this is a good book to learn how to play chess from.
