Opera as a joyous experience
The cheerful singer on the cover captures the essence of this book. It's obvious that the two authors share a love of their subject as well as a factual mastery of it. All the basics of opera history, personalities and plot synopses are here, but they're expressed in such a beautiful, economical, elegant way that the reader is captivated by the whole operatic experience. The plot summaries are little gems of conciseness, yet are so well written and full of human feeling that they make you want to see and hear the works described. As with all DK productions, the pictures are wonderful, and the slim, tall format makes this book easy to carry. I'm not an opera scholar, just someone who grew to love opera for its own sake after hearing some pieces that I liked. This is no scholarly tome, but it reaffirmed the glories of the operas I like and made me want to experience many others. I couldn't ask for anything more from a book!
