A huge fan

I am a huge fan, but I don't usually write a review. I like the element of surprise and seeing what others think of the book. I don't like reading the entire book in a review. So please let us enjoy this book and every twist and turn. Some of us would love to see for ourselves what lays in store.

Ok Read

I had given up on John Saul, but since I had previously purchased this book before giving up on him, I decided to read it. It was a decent read, nothing spectacular other than trying to figure out who the killer was, but once I found out, I was shocked. Towards the end, the suspense killing me. I wouldn't read this again, but I can say it was a decent read.

Not Great, But Not Bad

Face it - John Saul doesn't pretend to be John Steinbeck. His writing, at least in this book, is pretty pedestrian. The plot is often transparent, and so are the characters, who don't deserve even the usual comparison to cardboard. But that's not the point, and I give it a solid four stars because the author does the job he's supposed to do, which is to keep the reader turning the pages. His variation on the mad doctor tale is pretty decent. I also appreciated the subtext about our culture's preoccupation with youth and beauty at any price. Though it isn't Saul's best (at times it reads like he phoned it in) it probably isn't his worst either. It's fine for a quick and entertaining read.

Predictable

I like John Sauls books and have read mnay of them. The idea around this novel was good which is why I picked it up, but it was very predictable. You know who the killer is halfway through the book and its no surprise. The characters were good, I liked Alison, Micheal and Scott. Risa on the other hand was a total BORE. Who lets their daughter just get implants? Better yet what kind of mother suggests that her 16! year old daughter get them! Thats totally unrealistic. And the fact that she just died in the end was rediculous too. Think about who you marry before you do so. Woman should know if a man had JUST lost his wife there are going to be some emotional paths in which they need to go down before finding someone else and marrying them in less than a year. <BR/><BR/>Saul fans should read, but its just so predictable.. Overall a good book tho if you didnt figure out the ending before you got there.

not John Sauls normal 'spooky' book

If you are expecting John Sauls latest novel to be his normal cannot put it down book- you will be disapointed. The book is extremely gruesome,unbelievable, and predicatable. There are two story lines that will wrap together for a typical ending you will figure out long before the last page. Not his normal spooky 'evil' book about the unexplainable-Wait for the paperbook or check out at your local library!

not John Saul style

I'm a big fan of John Saul books but this one wasn't his best. I love the story and the bond between Alison and her father Micheal. I enjoy the book but it was to predicatable.

HOW DEEP IS SKIN DEEP?

As many know John Saul is a master at penning thrillers, chilling thrillers. His 35th offering, Faces of Fear, may well be the chillingest. What could be more frightening than marrying a man you think you know and then discovering that he is not at all the man you thought he was? The answer to that question is it is even more terrifying when said husband means to harm your child. Prominent plastic surgeon Conrad Dunn has had a hand in (or scalpel, if you will) in creating some of the most beautiful people to be found in Bel Air. Among them was his late wife, Margot. After scarring her face in an accident she took her own life. It only took a year for Dunn to find a second wife, the lovely Risa Shaw, mother to 15-year-old Allison. It's quite a leap from the Shaw's former home in Santa Monica to a plush mansion in Bel Air, but Allison is happy for her mom and tries her utmost to adjust to a school full of very rich kids and what is in essence a very different life. Once a down to earth kid not too interested in appearances, she suddenly finds herself among the prettiest of the pretty. Risa is a firm believer in while beauty may be only skin deep it's also a key to the good life, so when Dunn proposes improving on what nature gave Allison she enthusiastically approves. Before long Allison comes across a picture of Margot, and is shocked to see the resemblance between the face in the photo and the work Dunn has planned for her. Of course, knowing this author that's only the beginning of the horrors to come. - Gail Cooke
